Chess Set Buying Guide
for scholastic tournament players
updated May 2016

If you are an elementary, middle or high school student looking to buy your first tournament chess set, board and bag, this guide is intended for you.
If you've watched or played in a scholastic chess tournament, you've seen the sets and pieces that are used. It's a good idea to invest in a similar set for your own personal and tournament use.
Board: What you want is a vinyl roll-up board, with dark green squares (the tournament standard) that are around 2.25 inches wide.
Set: Get the solid plastic "club" pieces, either "basic", "quality" or "heavy". The king should be about 3.75 inches tall.
Bag: Take your pick. It may be a basic bag for just the pieces, it may include a sleeve for your chessboard, it may also include space for your clock and scorebook too.
