Ferndale placed second and Mount Vernon third in the sophomore season of
the Northwest League.
Entering the final meet Ferndale held a slim half point lead over Lynden,
then lost it when the Lynden B team held them to a match draw in the
semi-final round.
Mount Baker and the Lynden B team played a tense match as they entered
the last round tied, and only the match winner could claim the final
qualifying spot for the State Chess Championships on February 25-26.
Mount Baker pulled out the win by a single game and will join
Meridian, Blaine, Sedro-Woolley and the top three in representing
the Northwest League at State.
Four players went undefeated for the entire league season: Karl Keller,
Lynden, Tristan Anderson, Lynden, Asher Paisley, Ferndale, and
Jared Schwede, Ferndale.
At Halfway Point, Lynden and Ferndale Lead
Meridian H.S. -
Twelve teams from nine northwest high schools met on January 10 for
Rounds 3 and 4 of the Washington High School Chess Assocation Northwest
League.
With four rounds completed and four to go, Ferndale holds the slimmest
of margins, a half-point edge, over Lynden for the league lead.
Both leading teams gave up points in round three, and survived scares in
the fourth round. Sedro-Woolley's Gabe Santana missed a one-move
checkmate twice in a row before Ferndale's Derek Schwede removed the
opportunity and went on to win. And Blaine's Jeremiah Smith had a very
strong position against Lynden's Bert Rutgers, but Bert pulled out a
victory in the final minutes of the match.
The next Northwest Chess League meet will be January 24 at Ferndale High
School.

Some facts about high school chess in Washington
For several decades now the Washington High School Chess Association (WHSCA) has organized most major scholastic chess events for the state, including the Washington State High School Team Chess Championships. They have also provided structure and oversight to the many interscholastic chess leagues in Washington.
Last year the Northwest League became the newest WHSCA league, providing league chess competition for high schools in Whatcom and Skagit counties.
The Northwest League became the seventh WHSCA league. These leagues average ten teams per league, ranging from the large Seattle Metro League (16 high school teams) to the new So. Central Wa. League (3 high schools). Last year 44 teams qualified and participated at the State Championships. A team must place in the upper half of its league in order to qualify for State.
This year's Washington State High School Team Championships is February 25-26, 2000.
