The game is afoot!
A week of chess instruction and fun is in store for participants at the 2002 Samish Summer Chess Camp. USCF Master Elliott Neff, Expert Randy Walther and other certified teachers will provide instruction in all phases of the royal game, using a variety of formats. Skills get to be tested in the rated tournament that takes place in the afternoons. (Along with the pick-up Speed and Bughouse games!)

Who is invited: 1st-8th graders from Skagit/Whatcom counties and environs.

When: July 8-11 (Mon.-Thurs.) 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Drop off begins at 8:45, pick up between 3:30 and 4 p.m.

Note: Camp takes place between two Bellingham Hot Summer Chess Tournaments, July 2 and July 29. This will be a good time to practice your game!

Where: Samish Elementary School, 5 miles north of Sedro-Woolley on Highway 9, at the intersection of Highway 9 and Prairie Road. (The Red Star on the map below).

Educational program: Opening, middlegame and endgame studies; rules review; tournament games with games review; chess notation and clock use; speed chess (top groups); puzzles.

DAILY SCHEDULE:
9:00-11:45 classes: openings, middlegame, endgame, tactics (for advanced, intermediate, and beginning levels)
11:45-12:30 Lunch
12:30-3:00 Tournament:
Samish Summer Cup 2002
Trophies and medals to winners by sections and grades. Tournament games are WHSCA rated.
3:00-3:30 Games reviewing with students
3:30 student pickup begins
Closing and Awards Ceremony Thursday, 3:15 pm

Bring a sack lunch. We will have some concessions on site. We will also have Samish Summer Chess Camp T-shirts available (by pre-order) for $10.00 each. All chess equipment will be provided, but please bring clocks if you have them.

Fees:
$75.00 per child. (additional siblings, $65.00 each).
Pay by cash or check only.
Deadline: June 10. Please register in advance!
Cancellation fee: $10.00.

THE 2002 SAMISH SUMMER CHESS CAMP, held at Samish Elementary in Sedro-Woolley, 
July 8-11, was a great success!  The camp drew 33 participants (beginners, advanced, 
and intermediate players, grades 1-8) from Skagit and Whatcom Counties and beyond.  
Instructors Elliot Neff and Randy Walther taught morning classes and ran an ongoing 
rated tournament in the afternoon.  The four day camp culminated in an awards 
ceremony, the results of which are listed below.  

Organizers Anne Lobeck and Randy Walther hope to run another camp next year, 
with both Randy W. and Elliot as instructors. Look for more information next 
spring to register!
