2000 H.S. State Team Championships

Lynden placed 4th and Ferndale 5th at the 2000 Washington State High School Chess Team Championships, held February 25 and 26 at Issaquah High School.

The tournament, which concludes the scholastic chess season, brought together 44 of the best high school chess teams from around the state, each of whom qualified for State by posting winning records in their respective leagues.

Lynden was in 6th place entering the final round of the two-day tournament. Facing the defending State champions Puyallup, they pulled off a convincing match victory with three wins, one draw, and one loss. A crucial victory came from Lynden's fifth board, James Rienstra, who upset his higher-ranked opponent by producing a surprise checkmate move from an inferior position to win the game. Lynden finished 4th in State with 17 wins.

In the Northwest League, Lynden had finished first, Ferndale second, and Mount Vernon third. Two Northwest League teams, Mount Vernon and Ferndale, were tied for 9th entering the fifth and final round of State. Ferndale, recovering from a disastrous first day of competition, lost only 2 of their final 15 games and by defeating Mount Vernon 4-1 claimed the 5th place trophy with 16.5 wins.

Lakeside of Seattle placed first with 20.5 wins, Garfield second with 19.0, and Lincoln of Tacoma third with 18.0 wins.

Other Northwest League teams at Chess State include Mount Vernon, who finished with 13.5 wins, Mount Baker, 10.5, Blaine 9.5, Sedro-Woolley 8.5, and Meridian 7.0 wins.

Of the seven players named to the State All-Star Team after the event, two hailed from the Northwest League. Ferndale's Derek Schwede received the Board One All-Star medal by being the only top board to achieve a perfect score of five wins. And Lynden's Karl Keller was named Board Three All-Star by going undefeated, giving up only a draw in five rounds.

In the State Junior Varsity tournament running concurrently, Matt Hammons of Lynden placed 5th overall, and Dan Bartle of Ferndale received the Upset Prize by defeating a player ranked over 800 points higher than himself.
