Rook Pawns are Drawish!If you're behind by a pawn, but it's a rook pawn, don't despair. Many times you can salvage a draw.
Take a look at the positions below. They're all White's turn to move. With best play, all the positions on the left are a forced win for White.
All the positions on the right, basically identical to those on the left but featuring a rook pawn, are a forced draw!  
 
 
 
  On the right, White would be winning if his bishop were on the dark squares instead of the light squares. He has "the wrong color bishop!" If you want to practice playing any of these positions (or others), visit the Endgame Simulator, make the position, click 'Generate Diagram' and give it a shot.
